GEAS Fall Camping Trip

GEAS_rafting

Graduate Students in Earth and Atmospheric Sciences had an incredible Fall retreat this year exploring the Appalachian mountains while camping, white water rafting, hiking, and eating s’mores!
GEAS takes a yearly camping trip to bond with the new cohort, discuss goals for the year, and share advice between new and experienced graduate students. Missed out this year? Make sure to reserve the weekend for next year!

Science Showcase at Ponce City Farmers Market!

Join the Graduates in Earth and Atmospheric Sciences and faculty from Georgia Tech EAS department at the Ponce City Farmers market! One Tuesday per month from June to November we will host a special program sharing science about our planet and how it can apply to daily lives. Every session will have an activity just for kids, with a special sticker badge for completion! Are you ready to be a hazard hero, a climate ranger, and a dark skies avenger?!

Screen Shot 2018-06-07 at 11.49.20 AM

(June 12th) Hazard Preparedness: Learn about different types of natural disasters and strategies you can take to prepare. Atlanta weather can bring us tropical storms, flooding, and winter weather events –learn practical prepping!

(July 3rd) Urbanization and the Water Cycle: Meet a GT geochemist and learn about the Atlanta watershed, the health of the streams, and the indicators of water quality. Ever heard of the Chatahoochee Riverkeeper? Learn more about volunteer opportunities to help our local water sources!

(August 7th) Under Ice Robots: Georgia Tech scientists are using unmanned robotic vehicles to study ice sheets from below! Be sure to catch this booth to see videos taken from under the ice and learn about the big melt.

(September 4th) DIY Meteorology: Did you know that you can build your own meteorology kit at home? Learn how to with common items, and learn about reading the weather and storm generation! Fun for kids!

(October 2nd) Dark Skies Protection: Urbanization and light pollution contribute to a loss of ‘dark skies’. This makes it hard to see the stars, hard for nocturnal animals to hunt and navigate, and disrupts the natural cycles of non-nocturnal animals. Learn how to make changes in your home and encourage changes at a municipal level. Also stop by for the basics of star-gazing!

(November 6th) Climate change: We know that the burning of fossil fuels results in higher concentrations of carbon in the atmosphere and ocean, which leads to further release of carbon and warming. Learn about what all this means and what we can expect to see in the coming years, decades and centuries from Dr. Kim Cobb, who has studied climate change indicators in the tropics!

GEAS Hiking Trip – November 2013

This past weekend, GEAS hosted a trip to Amicalola Falls State Park, about 1.5-hrs outside of Atlanta.  The trip consisted of a 10-mile hike up to the beautiful Amicalola Falls, and was accompanied by rather grey and hazy weather that surprisingly lent itself to some stunning pictures of the Falls and surrounding area.

Said pictures will be posted once OIT figures out why our website hates pictures.  Stupid website.

If you have any ideas for future hiking trips (or camping trips?), feel free to email Tiegan with your thoughts.  We would definitely be interested in another trip once the weather gets better!  It’s nice to get outside once in a while…

Website is Live

After quite a bit of procrastinating, this graduate student website is [finally] up and running! In the near future this website will contain information for EAS grads including useful resources for administrative procedures, updates on GEAS events, contact information for your representatives, as well as pictures from the field to keep you in the loop about what your colleagues are up to when they’re not in the lab.

If you have content that you would like to contribute we encourage you to contact us! You can either email your academic representative or tiegan ‘dot’ hobbs ‘at’ eas.gatech.edu.
